Snow and Cold

You would think that with the snow and cold of winter things would slow down on the farm. The reality of it is that livestock chores get more difficult. We are feeding over a thousand pounds of hay a day. With the snow we got last night it is going to be a fun day of chores in the COLD. HA! HA!

We are pretty much caught up on all of our beef orders for the year. We have just a few late orders to get filled. These are most likely the last orders we are going to take for 2010.

Reminder : we will be in Ann Arbor at the Lunasa farmers market on Tuesday, Dec. 14th.

See you soon.

November Push

Sorry it has been so long since our last posting. I have spent most of October and all of  November trying to get all of the meat orders filled. Beef and Pork orders are almost all filled but a few orders are going to take us into December. I have been from one side of the state to the other, meeting, delivering and speaking about the Hiday Farm and our meat products. I loggeg close to 600 miles in just two days this week alone.

Turkeys are on the minds of many of you, this time of year. The majority of the birds are going on the 13th. for processing. I will have a better idea on sizes and order fullfilments after that Saturday. I'm worried we may have some birds not make weight by then. This may leave us without extras. All preorders should be fine. I will be in touch as soon as I know.

Hope all is going well with you and your family.

What A Week

This week was a very busy week. It was week 13 of the vegetable CSA. We hauled cattle on both Tuesday and Wednesday to be processed. Wednesday evening I went and Listened to Joel Salatin speak at Albion College. I got to meet Joel and got a few questions answered, but wish I could have a day or two of his time. Then Saturday Alex and I attended the Eastern Market and on Sunday Holly and I attended and had a vendor table at the Tillers International Harvest Fest in Kalamazoo. Holly and I had a great time at Tillers today. It is a very neat place to visit.
Well, time to go get some rest and get ready for the upcoming week.

If you are planning on attending the Pumpkin Pick, please RSVP (517) 765-2268 with the number of children attending. The Pumpkin pick-Open house will be on October 10th. from 2 to 4 pm. Rain or Shine.

That Time Of Year

You would think that with the vegetable CSA winding down for the season it wouldn't be so busy, but that is not the case. This is week 13 for the vegetables and we are also sorting and shipping cattle. This week we are sending the first group of cattle that are ready to be processed. So many of you are getting calls from me with cutting order questions. The next groups of cattle will be going in October. Fall is in the air. Time to prepare for winter.

This week we plan on being at the Eastern Market on Saturday and on Sunday we will be in Scotts Michigan, at the Tillers International Fall Harvest Fest.

See you soon,
Dan

Processing Time.

After weeks of browsing pasture and growing to size, it was time for another batch of meat chickens to be processed and they are now ready for purchase. Chickens, as well as other meat products are available on Wednesday evenings during the CSA pick up from 5-5:30 pm. You can also call the farm at (517) 765-2268 for pick up at your convenience.

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Home Grown Chicken.

Rest assured that chickens from Hiday Farm have led a very different life than their factory farmed counterparts. Free to stroll about in the tall grass, they spend their days catching bugs, wandering the pasture, and stretching out in the sun. Breathing in fresh air with plenty of room to roam, a Hiday chicken is a healthy chicken. No antibiotics needed!

Wind, Wind and more Wind

Boy, is it windy out this evening. It was a very nice day for pick-up. It is week 12 of the vegetable CSA. For many of you who are purchasing beef you will be getting a call soon. Many of the beeves are ready to go and are booked for the processor.

This Saturday we will be at the Farmers Market in Texas Twp. Our goal is to be up in Detroit on the 18th. and on the 19th we will have a booth at the Tillers Harvest Fest, located in Scotts, Mi.(Not sure if we will have product or just an information booth at Tillers) At Texas Twp. we will have Beef, Chicken and a limited amount of Pork.

Well, week elevens pick-ups are complete. With the Holiday weekend coming up, week 12's schedule will have a small change in it. Monday Sept. 6th's pick-up will be moved to Tuesday the 7th. Same time and place.

Looks like I am going to get wet doing chores today, but that is OK. Things are dry and we really needed this rain.

Week 10

What a busy week. We completed week ten of the vegetable CSA. After two days of working on and off on the International tractor, we finally got it running. It was a frustrating job.

Picked up several of the pigs being processed and I have been sorting so we can get it distributed.

Thursday, I gave a farm tour to Hollis and Ian Smith. Hollis and his wife Kim own Kim's Produce in Detroit. They carry some of our meat products. Hollis brought thier young son Ian to see the farm. Not too many cows and pigs in Detroit. It was a fun visit. They also left with a bunch of product.

Mowed several acres of hay. After fixing several broken blades that I broke on the very first round in the field. I got it all mowed and hope to get it baled early next week.

No wonder the summer seems to be flying by. Can't think of anything else I would rather do though.

Lucus Works on his Farmer Percentage!

Farmer Dan's nephew Lucas works on the new drain going in to divert rainwater flow away from the house. Lucas has proven to be a super helper this week and all around handy young man! Whether handling shovels, poultry or livestock, he is not one to shy away from hard work. Well, Lucas, we think your farmer percentage is climbing right along!

WEDNESDAY UPDATE

The Wednesday pick-up bags are filled and things keep moving along on the Hiday Farm.

Lucas keeps earning more Farm Boy points. We have tried to keep him busy. He has helped feed the chickens and turkeys. Yesterday we loaded 40 chickens and 15 ducks to go to the processors. Today we have been busy working on the new storm drain. He is doing a great job.

See you at Texas Twp. this Saturday.

MONDAY! MONDAY! MONDAY!

Our hardest day of the week. Today is pick-up day for Marshall and Battle Creek. It is also the last Monday I have Aaron as help for the CSA. He and Adam head back to college on Saturday. I'm not looking forward to that.

I am excited about my visitor coming to the farm tonight. My youngest nephew, Lucas (age 11) is coming to spend the week with Uncle Dan, Aunt Holly and the Boys. He wants to earn some Farm boy points. He says he is about 10% farm boy from other visits he has made. He plans on staying the week and wants to be up to about 50% by the end of the week. We will put him to the test and see how it goes. Lucas lives in the Detroit area and is a wonderful boy. We will keep you posted on how he is doing and hopefully get some pictures up for you to see.

Clean Up Day.

Alex fired up the chainsaw today to tackle more limbs down  from recent storms. It has been a hot, humid and stormy summer with clean up nearly every weekend! With limbs down on fences, canopies in knots, flash flooding and more...we've seen it all. But with a touch of humor, the Hiday guys get to the extra work and carry on!

Cattle Chores

Today is another cattle chore day. Last Friday we sorted several of the beeves that are going to butchered this fall.(They look great). We moved them to the field north of the house. We took one cutting of hay off this field in June and now it is full of good fresh clover and grass to fatten the cattle on. As usual, a couple of them broke through the fence to get back with the cows. So today Aaron and I fixed fence and Adam, Aaron and I resorted the cattle.

PORK buyers, we will be sending the pigs to the processor in the next few days. We will be calling soon with pick up times.

Friday, July 23, 2010

Cattle Day.

Farmer Dan was up in the wee hours monitoring storm assessment. Looks like more interesting weather on tap for this afternoon, so a busy morning ahead. The to-do list for today includes pulling weeds, fixing fences and moving cattle to new pasture. Separating the steer going to be processed this fall from their mommas. Ought to be a lively afternoon!

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Pastured Pork.

The pigs, (as well as all livestock here) at Hiday Farm, have lush pasture to wander about in; to eat and root around as nature intended. With freedom to frolic, stretch out, wallow in a mud puddle or take a snooze in the shade of a tree, they busy their days doing things that pigs were meant to do. We feel this makes for a healthier animal which translates to a quality meat product we are proud to provide for our customers.
